Gymnastics Dress Code
You’ve signed your child up for gymnastics and now you want to know what they should wear! It is extremely important that all children are to be dressed appropriately for class both for their comfort and safety.
WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD WEAR at GYMNASTICS?
The ‘proper’ gymnastics attire is a leotard, and most participants in the gym will be wearing them, leotards are great because they won’t catch on anything and they let your gymnast have a full range of movement however they are not essential and there are different options for your child to wear.
Crop tops, skirts, dresses, combat trousers/shorts and jeans are not permitted, and your child will not be allowed in the gym if they come to class wearing these items.
Hair Tied Back
Gymnasts should have their hair tied back in a hairstyle which prevents their hair getting caught when doing skills. Ponytails, bunches, buns or braids are all popular hairstyles for gymnastics. If your child has a long fringe, please ensure it is clipped back to prevent it from getting their eyes.
No Jewellery
Jewellery must be removed prior to coming in to class. Newly pierced ears (studs) should be taped but must be removed after the healing period.
Religious and Medical jewellery: - With regards to the wearing of jewellery; sensitivity to religious beliefs and medical requirements are afforded, but safety is paramount and any jewellery that is considered by the coach to be a safety hazard, should be changed or participation may be prohibited. Diabetes Bracelets for example, should be covered by a sweatband during participation but coaches should be informed that the gymnast is wearing one. No necklaces are permitted.
Glasses
Children wearing glasses during gymnastics is perfectly fine however if your gymnast does wear glasses, you want to make sure they won’t fall off when they are tumbling around in the gym. Some glasses are made specifically for sports; however, some can be secured with a sports strap if needed.
Boys
Boys should wear a leotard and shorts or a t-shirt and shorts with no buttons or zips. Soft jogging bottoms are allowed however they must be short enough that they don’t trip the gymnast up and must be elasticated at the ankle. Gymnasts participate barefoot as wearing socks could cause slips or falls.
Girls
Gymnasts should ideally wear a leotard. There are many different types – short or long sleeves or in a unitard style. Gymnasts can wear shorts or leggings on top of their leotard and if gymnasts do not have a leotard, shorts with no buttons or zips with a t-shirt works great. Some of our older gymnasts prefer to wear leggings with their leotard or t-shirt, the t-shirt should be fitted or be able to be tucked in for when the gymnasts are upside down.
WHAT SHOULD My child WEAR TO wee springers?
Our Wee Springers classes are fantastic fun, with the children encouraged to climb, swing, jump and roll throughout the class. In order to have the most fun, it is important that the children are dressed suitably for the class. Long hair should be pulled back into a ponytail or bunches and participants will take part in bare feet. Leggings, shorts or jogging bottoms are all suitable as are long and short sleeved t-shirts or for those who are aiming to be the next Simone Biles - a leotard!
