Lead Sport - Aspiring Coaches

Using sport to help young people gain recognised qualifications, become successful leaders in sport and develop skills for life and work to help towards a positive destination.

Aspiring Coaches

Part 1 - The Coaching Conference
Your journey will start with a 3-day interactive and practical-based conference designed for the new S4-S6 pupil. This will run early in June each year and is held at Perth UHI, sports hall. During this time you will gain knowledge and experience in leadership and meet people working in sports and leisure through a variety of different workshops. Such as coaching basics, planning, leading and delivering a sports session/event, mini medics, positive coaching mindset, dealing with behaviour, inclusion and healthy lifestyles.

Part 2 - Volunteering
To enhance your leadership abilities and advance along our coaching pathway, you must apply your training in practical settings and dedicate 25 hours to volunteering at a school and/or community club. To start with a school-based multisport club will be set up for you to volunteer at and you will work together as a group to deliver this to primary school pupils during term 1 and 2.  You must maintain a weekly log of your coaching activities as proof of your volunteer hours. If you click on this link Volunteer Logyou can download the App to your phone. However, if you are currently volunteering elsewhere (for example at a sports club or other organisation) that is fine - please discuss with your Active Schools Coordinator.

This documentation allows us to identify pupils who are actively participating in volunteering so we can arrange a sport-specific coaching qualification for those engaging in the programme.  In addition, we strongly encourage all participants to register for the Saltire Award, which serves as a platform for us to acknowledge, appreciate, and reward your dedication, contributions, and accomplishments, https:// saltireawards.scot

Part 3 - Becoming a Qualified Sports Coach
In the application, you will choose the sport you want to gain a nationally recognised qualification in. Whilst you are gaining valuable experience and skills volunteering, the LEAD team will organise for you to attend a coaching qualification with the relevant Governing Body. In some sports, you have to be 16 years old to attend a course and therefore some courses may be organised at different times.

The schedule for the 2025 program will be announced in March of that year. If you are interested in our leadership programmes and volunteering opportunities, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
