We also have a fantastic team of dedicated and experienced Fitness Instructors who go the extra mile every day to ensure that our members reach their fitness goals. We recently caught up with Fitness Instructor Ella for a chat to find out more about her and the work she does.

What is your position within Live Active? 

I’m a Fitness Instructor at Bell’s Sport Centre.  I have worked for Live Active for 5 years, starting off at Perth Leisure Pool as a General Assistant progressing to Leisure Assistant and then Senior Leisure Assistant. I was also a Receptionist at Live Active Rodney.

What qualifications do you have? 

I am currently completing my HONs Degree in Sport and Fitness with UHI. I started my studies in 2019 with HNC Fitness, Health, and Exercise where I gained my Level 2 Gym Instructor and Exercise to Music Qualification. I then moved on to HND Fitness, Health, and Exercise where I achieved my Level 3 Personal Trainer. I also have my National Pool Lifeguard Qualification which I have held for 4 years.

What do you love most about your job? 

Being able to support a wide variety of customers from beginners to more experienced clients. Watching the progression is highly satisfying and gives me a sense of accomplishment.

Working with professionals that I can learn from and inspire me. Knowing there are opportunities for self-development and the potential for advancement.

Do you take part in any sports or activities in your spare time? 

I’m lucky to live out in the countryside so going on regular long walks to scenic places with my dog can be breathtaking. I know my dog loves his walks as much as I do so it’s a win-win.

I enjoy creating playlists where I do exercise to music.  The routines always make me feel good about myself. The song choice is forever upbeat and I before I know it I have achieved 3K steps!

What advice would you give someone who’s interested in a career in fitness? 

Signing up to gym and fitness classes is a great place to start. Speaking to members of the fitness team about volunteering opportunities and applying for relevant qualifications such as college, Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 2 Group Fitness.  

Do you have a favourite class to teach and why? 

My favourite class to teach is Active Women which is on a Monday at 7pm. Since this started in January, I was able to see clients progress and develop their fitness levels and abilities.  They are always laughing and joking too which makes it even more enjoyable. I find this class to be very rewarding.

What would you say to someone who would like to start going to the gym or fitness classes, but feels nervous? 

The best way to start their journey would be to book a Welcome Session.  This will allow them to have a look around the gym while being able to try out the equipment with an instructor.  I’d also recommend they come and join our StartFit classes. These classes are held on a Tuesday at 7.20pm and Thursday at 7.15pm and lasts 45 minutes.  These classes consist of using various pieces of equipment which we have in the gym. StartFit is a beginners fitness class which is aimed at those who wish to start their fitness journey.
