Leadership, Employability, and Development (LEAD) Opportunities for Young People in Perth and Kinross.
LEAD Sport empowers young people across Perth and Kinross through leadership, employability, and development opportunities in sport and fitness. This programme helps young people gain valuable skills, build confidence, and take steps towards further education and future careers.
Active Schools
This programme is delivered in partnership with Active Schools, Sports Development, Perth College, community clubs, and local schools.
It’s designed to provide young people with tailored experiences, recognisable qualifications, and the confidence to lead.
Participants will:
- Develop leadership skills: To succeed in sport, school, and work.
- Gain nationally recognised qualifications: Including SCQF points.
- Build confidence through hands-on experience: Including schools, clubs, and Live Active facilities.
Introduction to Coaching
Our Introduction to Coaching programme helps young people take their first step into coaching.
This practical course covers leadership basics, session planning, and the confidence needed to lead activities.
It’s ideal for those curious about coaching or supporting community sport. No prior experience is needed, just a passion for helping others stay active.
Activate
Activate is a referral-based programme designed to engage pupils who would benefit from an alternative curriculum.
It uses the power of sport to inspire personal growth, leadership development, and increased confidence.
Pupils earn SCQF points while gaining valuable experience within the sports and leisure industry, helping them build a strong foundation for future opportunities.
Aspiring Coaches
Aspiring Coaches supports young people who want to pursue coaching qualifications. It starts with a three-day Coaching Conference for S4-S6 pupils, where participants gain practical leadership knowledge and work with sports industry professionals.
The programme continues with 25 hours of volunteering, helping young people apply their skills in real-world settings. This practical experience is tracked using a volunteer log app and encourages pupils to achieve the Saltire Award for volunteering.
Finally, participants select a sport and work towards a nationally recognised coaching qualification, providing a clear pathway into coaching.
College Community Coaches
This programme connects Perth UHI sports students with meaningful, practical placements in the sports and recreation sector.
Students apply their classroom learning in real-world environments, gaining valuable hands-on leadership experience.
The initiative is supported by sportscotland, local clubs, and national governing bodies, ensuring students leave with practical skills and leadership abilities to support their future careers.
Young People's Sport Panel
The Young People’s Sport Panel (YPSP) gives young people a platform to influence local sports opportunities. Panel members help promote sport across Perth and Kinross, support events, and champion youth participation.
The YPSP aims to:
- Raise the profile of sport and physical activity.
- Use sport to create positive change in the community.
- Break down barriers to improve sports access for all young people.
Panel members gain leadership experience, public speaking opportunities, and the chance to mentor new participants.
Modern Apprenticeships
Our Modern Apprenticeships provide 16–19-year-olds with work-based learning opportunities in sports and leisure.
Apprentices complete an SVQ Level 2 qualification in Sports Coaching at SCQF Level 6, alongside other sports-related awards.
This programme is ideal for those seeking practical experience while earning qualifications to support a career in sports development, coaching, or fitness.
