College Community Coaches

Perth UHI, Sport Development Officers and Active Schools PK have teamed up with wider stakeholders such as sportscotland, clubs and national governing bodies to provide sports students with meaningful placement and volunteering opportunities in sport and recreation.

Students have had an opportunity to take their learning in college to a variety of meaningful placements whilst studying, thus enhancing their leadership skills in a practical setting.

Moreover, our teams have been involved in a focus group – led by sportscotland officers at a national level, in order to develop this programme nationally.

23 / 24 Work Placement Impact

The collaborative partnership between UHI Perth, Live Active, Sport Scotland and many other organisations has allowed for another successful year of work placements. Students have had the opportunity to gain experience tailored to their individual interests, required learning and career goals.

I really enjoyed my work placement with Perth Pickleball. The participants were extremely friendly and inclusive. During my time with them, I improved my confidence and developed skills in time management and coaching communication. Learning a new sport was really refreshing, despite the scoring being tricky to initially understand! My mentors were very supportive, allowing me to work at my own pace, with gentle encouragement throughout which helped me achieve my Pickleball Ambassador qualification.

HNC Fitness, Health and Exercise Student

Work experience provided a platform for Carter to learn about the daily ongoings in a gym facility. Throughout the placement Carter showed a hunger to get involved participating in a variety of classes such as group cycling, body pump and HIIT. With a background in Strength/Power training Carter excelled in the basic strength class aiding regular customers in a variety of exercises and with an outgoing attitude managed to strike up a good relationship with various members.

Types of Activity

Fitness

Students were involved with local gyms including ASW, Bannatynes and Bells Sports Centre, assisting and leading fitness classes such as HIlT, Spin and many more.

Football

A popular sport when completing work placements was within Football. This included working with local clubs and with Active Schools.

Sports Therapy

Students from our Sports Therapy courses completed placements with private clinics and sport teams such as St Johnstone FC.

Climbing and Outdoors

Our Outdoors Education students took on work placements at various outdoor centres, with one student taking lead on teaching our NQ Level 5 and 6 how to climb.

Coaching

Basketball was delivered through work placements as an individual sport and within multisport sessions with Live Active.

Gymnastics

Students work in partnerships with P&K Active Schools to deliver gymnastics sessions to Academy pupils at Perth Grammar School.

Care Homes

Fitness students completed basic strength and movement placements within local care homes including Balhousie North Inch, Balhousie North Grove and Kincarrathie House.
