Perth & Kinross children get £323,000 boost for summer sport

Perth & Kinross Council (PKC) has received £323,000 through sportscotland’s Summer of Sport campaign, and Live Active Leisure (LAL) is putting the money straight into activities that get children and young people moving; from this summer right through to March 2027.

Councillor Eric Dysdale, Council Leader for Perth & Kinross Council said: “Every child in Perth and Kinross should have the chance to try new sports and stay active. This funding means hundreds of young people will get that chance this summer, and I’m delighted to see it reaching so many different groups across our communities.”

Here's what's on offer:

Swimming is free for under 16s

Everyday throughout the Perth & Kinross October school holidays, anyone under 16 can swim free at all Live Active pools, including Perth Leisure Pool. This fantastic offer is open to everyone not just Perth and Kinross residents; since its launch Perth Leisure Pool has welcomed visitors from all over Scotland.

Customers don’t need to book, just turn up, however it is advisable to check the venue’s swim timetable beforehand as times vary.

Free weekend family sportshall sessions

From now until 28th March 2027, families can enjoy a range of sports free available at all Live Active venues. Sports include badminton, 3v3 basketball, pickleball, short tennis or boccia. Slots are limited, so booking in advance is advised. Book online, through the app, or by phone.

Free pre-school sport sessions

Toddlers and pre-schoolers aged 18 months to 5 years can jump, run and play their way through free sessions designed to build confidence and basic skills. These run at venues across Perth and Kinross throughout the summer holidays. Sessions must be booked in advance via our Preschool Sports Session page.

LAL Coaching Teams are also visiting eight PKC Early Years Establishments throughout the summer holidays, taking fun activities directly to pre-school children to increase the reach.

Free sessions for young people with Additional Support Needs

Children and young people aged 5 to 18 with Additional Support Needs can join free, inclusive sports sessions at North Inch Campus and Glenearn Campus during the summer. Booking is required, check our ASN Multi-Sport Sessions page for full details.

LAL are also working directly in partnership with SHIP (Support Help and Integration in Perthshire) and Perth Autism Support to ensure that sport and physical activity are included in these organisations’ existing holiday provision.

Targeted Holiday Provision

Working in partnership with PKC Education, 350 children have been invited to attend week-long holiday camps in LAL and community venues across Perth and Kinross. Schools were asked to identify children and families who would benefit the most from this free opportunity over the summer holidays, which includes a nutritious lunch for those in attendance.

Club Funding

PACES Clubs and Community Sport Hubs were invited to apply for funding to create opportunities for young people aged 3 to 26 (particularly those facing disadvantage) to get active, stay active, and enjoy the benefits of physical activity. The funding was focussed around the 3 areas noted below and 14 local clubs have been successful at securing funding. These organisations will be delivering activities throughout the funding period, which lasts until March 2027.

  • Opportunities: Delivering a range of safe, welcoming and inclusive opportunities that reduce barriers to participation
  • Pathways: Providing accessible pathways from short term activity into sustained participation in school, club and community sport
  • Targeted: Introducing targeted initiatives where gaps exist, with a focus on long term engagement beyond the funding period

Phil Coleman, Service Manager – Physical Activity and Sport for Live Active Leisure said: “We know cost and confidence can be two of the biggest barriers stopping young people from getting involved in sport.

Through collaboration with local partners and stakeholders, we’ve worked hard to make sure there’s something for children of every age and ability across Perth & Kinross. It really is going to be an amazing Summer of Sport.”
