Live Active Leisure (LAL) is proud to announce the launch of its comprehensive recycling program across all swimming pool facilities. The “Don’t Bin It! Reduce, Re-use, Recycle” initiative aims to educate customers about proper disposal of swimming-related items and significantly reduce waste from pool facilities.
The program, which will be implemented at all LAL pool venues, will feature dedicated recycling stations for pool-specific waste and shower area consumables. Each venue will be equipped with recycling bins, informational posters, and clear guidance to help visitors make environmentally responsible choices.
The initiative also introduces a renewed lost property policy, ensuring unclaimed items are properly recycled through the scheme rather than discarded. LAL will partner with local environmental initiatives to ensure collected materials are repurposed appropriately.
Nikki Murphy, a local volunteer who will oversee the scheme, commented “Swimming facilities generate unique waste streams that traditional recycling programs often do not address. Items like swim goggles, caps, and arm bands can be recycled or repurposed when properly collected and processed.” She continued “I am volunteering my time to this initiative because I believe our swimming community can lead the way in environmental responsibility. Every item saved from landfill is a small victory, and together these small actions create meaningful change.”
Nikki, a master’s swimmer and environmental advocate, will coordinate weekly collections from Perth Leisure Pool, where recycling from all pool venues will be collated. She will wash all wearable items, and distribute waste to various local initiatives, who will reuse the waste for a variety of purposes.
The initiative aligns with LAL’s forthcoming environmental and sustainability policy and represents a significant step toward reducing the environmental footprint of recreational swimming facilities across the region.
