Helping Us Keep Your Pools Healthy

In recent months both Perth Leisure Pool and Breadalbane Community Campus have experienced a number of unrelated contamination incidents that have resulted in the temporary closure of our swimming pools.

We understand how frustrating these closures are for our customers, not to mention our staff and that’s why we want to work together with you to try to prevent this from happening in the future.

The good news is that there is some simple advice that every swimmer can do to make a difference.

Before you swim:

  • Have you, or anyone in your group, experienced sickness or diarrhoea in the last 48 hours? If so, please do not swim. We ask that all swimmers wait at least 2 full days after symptoms have passed before returning to the pool.
  • Has anyone been diagnosed with or suspected to have Cryptosporidium? If so, they must not swim for 14 days after symptoms have stopped. We know this feels like a long time, but Cryptosporidium poses a serious risk to other swimmers and we must follow strict guidelines.
  • Are young children fully potty trained? If not, please ensure they are wearing a well-fitting swim nappy. These are available from reception.
  • If you or anyone in your group has a problem with incontinence, please ensure appropriate protection is worn underneath swimwear.

While you’re at one of our swimming pools:

  • Please shower before entering the pool. This is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do.
  • Use the toilet facilities as needed throughout your visit and always wash your hands after using the toilet or changing nappies.
  • If you begin to feel unwell during your swim, please stop and leave the pool.

What to do if an accident happens:

We understand that accidents happen, a baby’s nappy leaks, a child doesn’t quite make it to the toilet in time, or someone feels suddenly unwell. Please don’t be embarrassed. Simply speak to a member of staff straight away so we can act quickly and carry out the required cleaning protocols with minimum disruption to everyone.  Please don’t ignore an incident and leave without telling us, as this impacts other users.

Why does this matter?

Closing a pool as a result of a faecal contamination affects a large number of users, from casual swimmers to children in lessons to clubs and people who have travelled from outside the local area to use our venues.

Our Healthy Swimming Guidelines explains why sometimes pools need to close and describes the steps that you can take to help ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable swim. Thank you for your understanding and support.
